Small Business Fulfilment in the UK: How to Choose a 3PL With No Minimum Orders

For a small ecommerce business, outsourcing fulfilment can feel like a decision meant for bigger brands. You might dispatch ten orders one week and forty the next, with a kitchen table doubling as your packing station. A warehouse sounds useful, but minimum volumes and fixed monthly fees can make it seem out of reach.

A third-party logistics provider, or 3PL, with no minimum orders offers another route. The important part is understanding what “no minimum” actually means, what you will pay and how the service fits your products.

Pack & Post NI is run by Nathan McClintock from Belfast, supporting brands across the UK and Ireland. Here is how to assess whether its approach, or another provider’s, suits your business.

What does a no-minimum-order 3PL actually offer?

A 3PL stores your stock, picks and packs customer orders, and arranges dispatch. If the term is new to you, start with our guide to what a 3PL is.

“No minimum orders” means you do not need to send a set number of orders through the service. That matters if you are launching, selling seasonally or managing unpredictable demand.

It does not mean there are no other charges. Storage, setup, incoming deliveries and postage can still apply, even when sales are quiet. Always separate an order-volume commitment from a minimum monthly spend: they are different conditions.

Pack & Post NI has no minimum orders, no monthly subscription and no long contract. Its storage and activity charges still need to be included in your budget.

Compare the full arrangement, not just the picking fee

A low headline picking price tells you very little without the surrounding terms. Ask each provider the same questions so you can compare like for like.

Build a realistic monthly cost example

Start with your typical month, not your best sales week. Record your order count, items per order, storage needs, incoming deliveries and returns. Then add postage separately rather than assuming it is included in fulfilment.

For example, imagine a brand sends 40 single-item orders in a month, uses two shelves and receives one standard stock delivery:

  • Pick and pack: 40 × £2 = £80.
  • Storage: 2 × £8 = £16.
  • Goods in: 1 × £15 = £15.
  • Labels: 40 × 50p = £20.
  • Total for these charges: £131 excluding VAT, plus postage.

The one-off setup fee is £150 excluding VAT, making those first-month charges £281 excluding VAT, plus postage. This example excludes returns, additional items, gift wrap and inserts.

If ten of those orders contain a second item, add £2.50 excluding VAT. Actual costs depend on your stock and activity, so use the example as a budgeting method rather than a complete quote.

Check how your products will be stored and packed

Before comparing warehouses, list your product dimensions, weights, number of stock lines and any special handling needs. A business selling folded clothing has different requirements from one shipping glass jars or awkwardly shaped gifts.

Pack & Post NI’s £2 pick-and-pack rate includes a standard box or mailer, with 25p for each additional item. Ask whether that standard packaging suits your products and discuss any specialist protection or presentation before sending stock.

Storage is £8 per shelf per month, excluding VAT. Share your stock quantities and dimensions so the required space can be assessed; do not assume every product range fits on one shelf.

For a practical overview of the process, read how it works. Clear product references and organised deliveries are worth discussing early, particularly when similar variants are easy to confuse.

Make sure sales channels and couriers fit your business

Check the sales channels you use now before planning around future ones. Pack & Post NI supports Shopify, TikTok Shop and Etsy. If your business uses another channel, ask how orders would be handled rather than assuming an integration exists.

Courier options include Royal Mail, Evri and DPD, with international shipping available on request. The right service depends on the parcel, destination and delivery requirements, not simply the lowest headline postage price.

Ask how dispatch timings, tracking and exceptions are communicated. Agree realistic expectations for your operation rather than relying on an assumed daily cut-off or promising customers a delivery speed you have not confirmed.

For brands sending orders across the UK and Ireland, discuss your actual destinations and any relevant customs or documentation requirements before setting customer-facing delivery terms.

Plan for returns, presentation and busy periods

Returns are part of the cost of selling online, not an afterthought. Pack & Post NI charges £1.50 per returned item, excluding VAT. Agree what should happen when an item comes back, including how its condition is assessed and whether it can return to saleable stock.

Gift wrap and inserts start from 30p per order, excluding VAT. If presentation matters to your brand, explain the materials and packing steps you want so the price and process can be confirmed.

A seasonal seller should also explain likely peaks. For example, a gift business might have modest weekly sales before a concentrated Christmas rush. No minimum orders helps during quieter periods, but forecast discussions still matter when preparing stock and agreeing how extra work will be managed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 3PL worthwhile for a very small business?

It can be, but there is no universal order threshold. Compare the full outsourced cost with your current packaging, postage, storage and time. Consider whether getting packing off your desk would help you run the business, without assuming outsourcing will automatically save money.

Does no minimum orders mean there are no monthly costs?

No. Pack & Post NI has no minimum orders and no monthly subscription, but storage is charged at £8 per shelf per month, excluding VAT. Other charges depend on activity. Ask what your bill would look like in a month with stock stored but no orders dispatched.

What does it cost to get started?

Setup is £150 excluding VAT. You should also budget for receiving your stock, storage and subsequent fulfilment charges. Standard goods in is £15 per delivery, with large deliveries charged at £20 per hour, excluding VAT.

Can I use my own branding?

Discuss your requirements before starting. Gift wrap and inserts are available from 30p per order excluding VAT, while standard boxes or mailers are included in the pick-and-pack rate. Confirm any bespoke packaging, materials and additional handling rather than assuming they are included.

Is there a long contract?

Pack & Post NI has no long contract. Before proceeding, still confirm the terms, notice arrangements and process for collecting or transferring remaining stock. Flexibility is most useful when both sides understand the practical details.

Choosing a small-business 3PL is about finding a workable fit, not chasing the cheapest picking fee. Compare setup, storage, goods in, packing, postage and returns alongside order commitments and communication.
